Wikipedia defines a scam as, "A confidence trick or confidence game (also known as a bunko, con, flim flam, gaffle, grift, hustle, scam, scheme, or swindle) is an attempt to defraud a person or group by gaining their confidence."

Basically you should check out every "opportunity" that comes your way and if it doesn't pass the smell test, pass on it. The

There are people out there who are not like us. They make their money through scams. They do not feel they need to or even want to earn their money honestly. They make a lot of money by scamming ordinary descent people like you and me. Half the battle is being aware of this and learning to recognize them when you run into them. This is just as important on the internet as it is anywhere else.

That does not mean that you have to stop using the internet in case you get scammed. The basic rule is that if something seems to be too good to be true, then it probably is. I imagine that if you have an email address you have received one of those emails telling you that you have won the lotto. I get about six per day in my inbox. If they were all real, Bill Gates would work for me. But, this kind of scam is easy to spot. There are a huge number of scams that are not quite as easy to recognize and some, like identity theft can be difficult to deal with when you do discover them.

There are thousands of scams being run worldwide every day online and off. We will concentrate on the internet scams here. In many cases scammers reach you through emails. But then the scam goes offline. In some cases you don't ever meet the person at all. They just get enough information from you via email to clean you out.
